For the man of style … a late Victorian brass-cased watch fob compass, dating to around 1885–1915.  Likely German in origin, this type of small personal compass was designed to be worn on the end of a watch chain rather than carried loose in a pocket.  Fitted with a fixed suspension loop and a larger secondary ring, it was the everyday carry (EDC) of its era—always available, used briefly when needed, and returned to the waistcoat.  Today, it would make an ideal gift for the collector or anyone with a fondness for late-Victorian or Edwardian style.

At the turn of the 20th century, compasses like these were commonly hung from an Albert chain (named after Prince Albert, husband of Queen Victoria, who popularized the style.)  An Albert chain was worn across a waistcoat, anchored through a buttonhole by a T-bar, with the watch in one pocket and a so-called “fob”—compass, pocket knife, coin holder, etc.—suspended from the opposite end.  On our compass, the larger secondary brass ring allowed the instrument to be easily unclipped and handled.  (Note: chain not included.)

Dimensions: (compass only) 1” x 1” x 3/8”
Weight: (with secondary loop) 0.4 oz.

Condition notes: Very good antique condition overall. Brass case shows light, even surface wear consistent with age and use use; brass has been left unpolished and retains a warm, patina with no dents, splits, or structural damage noted. Original glass cover intact with light surface marks and one very small chip to the top edge, visible only upon close inspection.  Dial markings remain clear and legible. Needle is present, responsive, and settles correctly when suspended. Fixed suspension loop at case is secure, with no movement or stress cracks. Larger secondary brass ring intact and functional. Other items in photos not included.
