Victorian Wooden Snuff Box with Inlaid Floral Motif | Antique English Tobacciana

For the traditionalist … a particularly handsome antique wooden snuff box, dating from the late 1800s to the early 1900s, with white-metal end caps and a crisply cut inlaid floral sprig motif.  The lid opens and closes smoothly, the wood (likely rosewood) shows rich grain with no warping or losses, and the curved form fits neatly in the palm. It has a warm, well-handled feel and would be well-suited to a gentleman’s desk or dresser, perhaps as a safe place for cufflinks or other small treasures.  

By the late 19th century, snuff boxes were once everyday companions for well-dressed men, carried in waistcoat pockets and handled constantly throughout the day. Wooden examples with inlaid motifs were especially popular around the turn of the century, valued for their durability and the small touch of ornament they added to an otherwise utilitarian object.  Our example reflects the careful handwork typical of the period and has survived in unusually fine condition.

Condition notes: Excellent antique condition throughout. Lid opens and closes smoothly with no sticking, warping, or looseness. Wood (likely rosewood) retains an even, well-preserved finish with no cracks, chips, losses, or surface wear beyond the faint, expected handling marks from age. White-metal end caps are clean and undented, with no corrosion or discoloration. Inlaid floral sprig motif is crisp and sits flush with the surrounding wood. Interior is clean and free of residue or odor. Box has been lightly polished while retaining its original patina. Other items in photos not included.
