For the workman … a vintage cross pein hammer by Bedford & Sons of Sheffield, dating to around 1930–1955. Measuring 11 inches in length, this small engineer’s hammer features a forged steel head, retains what appears to be its original ash handle, and displays a rich, time-earned patina consistent with decades of careful use. Still entirely capable as a practical bench tool, it would also make a handsome addition to a gentleman’s desk or library shelf.
John Bedford established his Sheffield business in 1792, and manufactured cast steel as well as a wide range of hand tools for almost two centuries until the firm was acquired by Spear & Jackson in 1972. Small cross pein hammers like our example were typically used by engineers, toolmakers, and instrument makers for light bench work such as setting punches, peining small rivets, tapping pins, and adjusting finely fitted steel components where precise, controlled striking was required.
Dimensions (Body): 11” x 3-3/4” (head) x 13/16” (head)
Weight: 4.9 ounces (including handle)
Condition Notes: Overall in excellent vintage condition, displaying honest wear consistent with decades of workshop use. Original ash handle retains a rich, well-aged patina throughout, with smooth handling wear, scattered surface marks, small nicks, and areas of discoloration. Forged steel head shows expected surface wear and light age-related marks with maker’s stamp (“BEDFORD”) clearly legible. Head displays slight movement when handled, though remains securely attached with no sign of separation or structural concern. Hammer has been gently polished and waxed to remove surface grime while preserving original patina. Other items shown in photos not included.
