The measure of a man … a handsome English “Treble” model winding tape measure in leather case with brass fittings, fold-out handle, and original 33-foot cloth (woven linen) tape, made by Chesterman. Measuring 3-1/2” across, the tape likely dates from 1940-1960 and is an especially well-preserved example of its type. The leather case shows very modest wear, and printing on the tape is bright and legible. This is a perfectly functional tool, but one that would display beautifully in a workshop or on a desk or bookshelf. The ideal gift for the craftsman, furniture maker, or lover of old tools.
We have not unwound the tape to its full length, but the fold-out handle operates well, the tape winds in and out easily, and the leather case bears a lovely patina consistent with age and use.
Cloth (woven) tape measures were a popular tool in the last century, and many are still in use today, but Chesterman warned against “expecting too much” from them:
“For precise and accurate measurements nothing but a steel tape should be used, but very good work can be done with a woven tape if it is tested with a steel tape, and allowance made for errors. If a woven tape is used in damp or wet conditions, it should always be allowed to dry first before being wound into the case - by doing this, the life of the tape is lengthened considerably, and the tape is less liable to shrink.”
Dimensions: 3-1/2” in diameter, 33’ tape
Condition Notes: Leather case shows minor abrasions consistent with age and use but is otherwise in very good vintage condition. Fold-out handle works well and tape winds in and out smoothly. See photos for more detail or contact us with questions.
