For the explorer … a vintage German opisometer or map measurer, c. 1955–1965, measuring 3 inches long and made with a chrome-plated teardrop body, tracking wheel, suspension ring, and dual-sided printed dial. One side measures distance in kilometers and miles, while the reverse side is marked for map scales of 1:25,000 and 1:50,000. Still completely functional, it would make a unique gift for the traveler and a distinctive addition to a gentleman’s desk or side table.
Opisometers, also known as curvimeters, were used to measure curved lines and route distances on printed maps. The small wheel is rolled along the line being measured (a road or river, for example), and the pointer translates that movement into distance using the printed scale on the dial. Instruments like this were used by motorists, hikers, cyclists, scouts, military trainees, and anyone planning routes before the advent of digital maps and GPS.
Dimensions: 3” x 1-1/2” x 1/4"
Weight: 1.1 ounces
Condition notes: Excellent vintage condition overall, with minor surface wear consistent with age, handling, and use. Glass covers on front and back show light surface wear, but all dials remain clear, visible, and easy to read. Tracking wheel and dials rotate as intended, and instrument appears fully functional, though has not been tested for accuracy. Other items in photos not included.
