For the aficionado … a vintage horn-handled cigar cutter retailed by M. Wachenheimer & Co. of London, measuring 5-5/8-inches long and dating to the interwar years between 1925 and 1939. Stamped “M.W. & Co Ltd”, the cutter features a spring-loaded steel blade, polished nickel-plated fittings, and natural horn grips (likely deer) secured with steel pins. A secondary notched feature at the opposing end was designed to help pry open wooden cigar boxes. As an authentic example of interwar tobacciana, it would make a distinctive gift and unique display piece for the cigar enthusiast or collector.
Founded in London about 1915, M. Wachenheimer & Co. Ltd. operated as both a silversmith and importer of fine gentleman’s and ladies’ accessories, including cigar cutters, cigarette cases, and lipstick holders. The company was active at least through the mid-1940s and exhibited at the British Industries Fair in 1947. Cutters such as our example, stamped “FOREIGN,” were likely sourced from Solingen, Germany, then and now the country’s center for cutlery and other precision steel goods.
Dimensions: 5-5/8” x 5/8” x 7/16”
Weight: 3.0 oz.
Condition notes: Very good vintage condition overall. Natural horn grips remain clean, secure, and evenly toned, with no cracks, chips, or lifting at the joins. Steel cutting mechanism displays light surface wear from age and handling, along with minor oxidation and darkening in recessed areas consistent with decades of use. Blade appears sharp, though has not been tested on a cigar. Spring-loaded mechanism opens and closes smoothly with strong tension. Stamping to blade housing remains visible, including “M.W. & Co Ltd” and “FOREIGN.” Other items in photos not included.
