Vintage Mappin & Webb Silver Plate Wine Coaster c. 1935-1950 | 4-Inch Rope-Twist Coaster by Charles S. Green & Co.

For the host …  a handsome vintage English silver-plated wine coaster made by Charles S. Green & Co. of Birmingham for Mappin & Webb, dating to around 1935-1950. Featuring a bright silver-plated body, rope-twist rim, turned hardwood base, and green baize underside, it measures 4-3/16" across the top with a 3-1/2" inner diameter and is sized to fit standard wine bottles. In excellent vintage condition, it would make a smart and practical addition to a gentleman’s drinks tray, bar cabinet, or dining table.

Charles S. Green & Co. was founded in Birmingham in the early 1900s by Charles Stevenson Green, a third-generation member of an established jewelry and silversmithing family. The firm produced tableware, barware, and presentation pieces in sterling silver and electroplate and, in addition to selling under its own name, manufactured for prominent retailers including Mappin & Webb—a common arrangement in the British silver trade.

Condition Notes: Excellent vintage condition overall.  Silver-plated body retains a bright, even finish with only minor surface wear and faint marks visible on close inspection. Turned hardwood base shows light wear consistent with age and use but remains in excellent condition, with a rich, warm tone throughout and no cracks, lifting, or structural damage observed. Lower lip is marked “MAPPIN & WEBB,” “MADE IN ENGLAND,” and Charles S. Green & Co.’s cannon trademark. Green baize backing remains intact but shows visible wear, rubbing, and discoloration from age and handling, as shown in photos. With a 3-1/2" inner diameter, coaster is sized for standard wine bottles but will not accommodate larger formats such as typical Chardonnay, Champagne, Syrah, or magnum.
