For the fisherman … a beautifully crafted 3-inch Nottingham-style wooden fishing reel, from around 1920-40, with brass footing and back plate, and ebonite handles. Featuring a warm patina, rich varnish, and brass fittings, and in remarkable condition for its age, the reel would make a distinctive addition to a gentleman’s desk or side table, as rustic or nautical décor, and as a thoughtful gift for the angler or boating enthusiast.
Nottingham-style reels, so called because they were built in or around Nottingham, England, emerged in the mid-19th century and played a significant role in the evolution of fishing tackle. They are typically light, free-running, wooden reels designed for river fishing. They resemble fly reels, and some were used for fly fishing, but the majority were used for bait fishing. Nottingham reels are highly collectible today due to their beautiful woodwork and attractive brass frameworks.
