Vintage Pocket Knife by Rowbotham, Sheffield c. 1925-1940 | English Bone-Handled Loom Knife

For the workman …  a vintage English bone-handled penknife by Rowbotham of Sheffield, dating to around 1925–1940. Measuring a little over 3-1/2 inches closed, this compact single-blade pocket knife features smooth bovine bone sides, steel pinned construction, and a steel blade showing honest wear from decades of regular use. Knives like these were commonly known as loom knives because they could be carried easily in a trouser or apron pocket without snagging on fabric, thread, or machinery in textile mills and industrial workshops of the time.  

The Rowbotham family were longstanding Sheffield cutlers whose roots trace to the mid-1700s.  Sheffield firms such as Rowbotham supplied enormous numbers of practical working knives to Britain’s industrial trades during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and examples like ours were commonly carried by textile workers, warehousemen, mechanics, and tradesmen for everyday cutting tasks.

Condition Notes: Overall in very good vintage condition, displaying honest wear consistent with decades of regular use. Bone sides remain structurally sound with no visible chips or cracks, showing expected surface wear, scratches, darkening and discoloration from age and handling. Steel body and blade display scattered surface marks, oxidation, and age-related wear throughout. Spring action remains exceptionally strong, with blade opening smoothly and snapping closed firmly when folded. Blade retains a reasonably sharp edge, though has not been recently honed or professionally sharpened. Knife has been lightly cleaned and gently polished while preserving original age and patina. Tang stamped “H. ROWBOTHAM & CO SHEFFIELD.” Other items shown in photos not included.
