For the artisan … a beautifully-crafted English folding boxwood ruler, model number 1167 by Rabone, likely dating from the early 1960s, but possibly earlier.  Fully extended, the ruler is 24 inches in length, one side marked in 1/8-inch increments, the other side in 1/16 inches.  The bold, so-called “blindman’s” numbers and markings remain crisp and legible.  With brass hinges and end caps, the ruler is in remarkable condition, and would make an ideal gift for a craftsman, teacher, or collector of vintage tools.

John Rabone & Sons were a pre-eminent British manufacturer of rules and measuring devices, with origins dating back to the late 1700s.  The No. 1167 model was a staple in the company’s catalogs from the late 19th century, a testament to its enduring quality and design.  Rabone operated as a family business until it merged with Chesterman & Co of Sheffield in 1963.

Size: 24” x 11/16” x 1/8”
Weight: 2.5 oz.

Condition notes: Overall, in excellent vintage condition with only minimal wear.  Slight tarnish to central hinge.  Faint “x” marked at 2-inch mark on one side.  Small paint (?) stain on one edge.  Ruler folds easily and securely.  See photos for more detail and feel free to contact the shop with any questions before purchase.
