For the tradesman … a vintage 12-inch brass hanging scale, Salter’s Improved Spring Balance No. 2, dating to around 1900–1930 and rated to 30 pounds, with an engraved brass dial, forged iron ring, and matching hook. Once a practical tool of market stalls, fisheries, and country estates, its sturdy construction and clean graphic form make it ideal for display in a gentleman’s kitchen, den, or workshop.
Founded in London in 1760 by Richard Salter, by the early 1800s Salter had become the dominant British maker of spring balances, trade scales, and government-certified weighing instruments. In Victorian and Edwardian times, the company was synonymous with scales in Britain, supplying commercial trade across a broad swath of industries from agriculture to shipping.
Compact and portable, the No. 2 model was designed for everyday weighing of fish, game, parcels, and provisions. The engraved brass plate ensured durability and legibility in working conditions, while the steel spring housing reflects the straightforward engineering that made Salter a household name.
Dimensions: (Face) 12” x 2-3/16” ; (Scale Including Ring & Hook) 17-1/4 x 1-5/16”
Weight: 1 lb. 9.7 oz.
Condition notes: Very good vintage condition overall with age-appropriate surface wear throughout. Scale appears functional, with pointer moving freely through the viewing window, but has not been tested for accuracy and is recommended for display use only. Brass face plate shows scattered oxidation and small areas of surface spotting consistent with long use, with all graduations and lettering remaining clear and fully legible. Markings on dial include Salter’s knotted rope trademark along with: “NO. 2,” “SALTER’S IMPROVED SPRING BALANCE,” “MADE IN ENGLAND,” and “TO WEIGH 30 LB BY ¼ LB.” Rear steel housing shows areas of paint loss and surface wear, along with white oxidation observable through the viewing window. Suspension ring and hook display light surface wear consistent with age, with no visible cracks, structural losses, or repairs. Scale has been lightly waxed; brass has not been polished in order to retain original patina. Other items in photos not included.
