Vintage Sybren 1-meter Boxwood Folding Ruler No. 80.00.10 | Dual-Scale Inches & Centimeters, London Mark

For the builder … a handsome vintage meter-long boxwood folding ruler with brass fittings, model No. 80.00.10, made by Sybren of Holland.  Likely dating from the 1950s-1960s, this dual-scale ruler features crisp, deeply incised markings (inches on one side, centimeters on the other) and a boxwood surface with remarkably little wear for its age.  A perfectly functional instrument that would make an ideal photo prop or display piece on a gentleman’s desk or side table.

Folding boxwood rulers have served in workshops, boatyards, and building sites since the 1800s—favored by tradesmen for their durability and ability to deliver accurate measurements without the curl or sag of a tape measure.  A Dutch manufacturer active throughout much of the 20th century, Sybren produced wooden rules for both domestic and export customers.  Our example bears marks for “Made in Holland” and “London,” reflecting its intended UK market, where it was sourced by us.

Condition notes: Excellent vintage condition overall. Boxwood body is well-preserved, with crisp, deeply incised markings and clear stamps reading “No. 80.00.10,” “SYBREN,” “MADE IN HOLLAND,” and “LONDON.” Surface shows a few small areas of paint and very slight chips at the 12", 31", and 32" positions, none affecting structure or function. Brass fittings display minor tarnish consistent with age and have been lightly polished. All hinges operate smoothly; joints have a looser feel from use over time, but fold and extend without issue.  See photos for more detail and feel free to contact the shop with any questions prior to purchase.
