Vintage Wheatley Aluminum Fly Box Model 1407F with 68 Trout Flies | Silmalloy Case, c. 1985-1995

For the angler …  a vintage Richard Wheatley “Silver Seal” aluminum fly box, Model No. 1407F, measuring 4-7/8” x 3-1/2” and dating from around 1985-1995. The box retains its original cardboard carton and holds 68 vintage trout flies, arranged across 12 latchable compartments and an owner-installed green felt liner in the lid. The neatly labeled selection of flies makes this an especially complete example and an inspired gift for the angler or collector.

The No. 1407F combined Wheatley’s compact aluminum case with 12 transparent-lidded compartments and a flat pad in the lid for additional flies. The flies in our example include a varied assortment of traditional trout patterns, including dry flies, wet flies, duns, spinners, and nymphs, with most tied on barbless hooks, and all in exceptional condition with crisp hackles and intact dressings. The range of patterns and sizes suggests a working collection assembled over time by an angler who kept a broad selection ready for different conditions.

Richard Wheatley was founded in Birmingham, England in 1860 and has produced metal fly boxes continuously for more than a century. Their lightweight aluminum Silmalloy boxes and patented compartment and clip systems have long been standard equipment for serious fly fishers in Britain and abroad, valued for their durability, corrosion resistance, and precise construction.

Condition notes: Very good vintage condition overall. Silmalloy aluminum body remains structurally sound, showing scattered scratches, small surface marks, and areas of discoloration consistent with age and use, with no major dents, crushed corners, or structural distortion observed. Lid aligns properly, and hinge and closure operate as intended. All 12 compartment lids latch and unlatch as intended. Bottom stamped “WHEATLEY SILMALLOY METAL.” Area near side hinge stamped “MADE IN ENGLAND” with company diamond trademark. Box contains 68 vintage trout flies in assorted sizes, colors, and traditional patterns; flies remain in generally excellent condition, with crisp dressings and very little visible evidence of use.  Compartment windows retain handwritten labels identifying patterns and hook sizes, including Iron Blue Dun 12 and 16, Blue Winged Olive 12, Olive Dun 12 and 14, Red Spinner 12, Wickham’s Fancy 12, and Black Gnat in assorted sizes. Green felt pad in lid appears owner-installed and is glued in place. Original cardboard carton shows edge wear, small dents, and general handling marks consistent with age, while flaps remain intact and close as intended.  Other items in photos not included.
