Vintage Wheatley Fly Box Model 1421 with 36 Trout Flies | Silmalloy Case, c. 1960-1975

For the angler …  a vintage Richard Wheatley “Silmalloy” aluminum fly box, Model No. 1421, measuring approximately 4-3/4” x 3-1/2” and dating from around 1960-1975. The box holds 36 vintage hand-tied trout flies in a varied assortment of traditional wet patterns, winged styles, hackled dressings, and small attractors. An authentic working Wheatley box, it would make an ideal gift for the angler and a distinctive display piece in a gentleman’s study or lakeside cabin.

The No. 1421 was one of Wheatley’s compact 4-inch-format clip boxes, with 70 small clips arranged across two facing plates.  The flies in our example are mostly traditional British trout patterns, including feather hackles and wings, floss and thread bodies, peacock herl, chenille, and metallic tinsel, with colors ranging from muted browns and grays to blue, green, orange, and yellow.  The variation in proportions, colors, and dressing suggests a working collection accumulated over time by the original owner.

Richard Wheatley was founded in Birmingham, England in 1860 and has produced metal fly boxes continuously for more than a century. Their lightweight aluminum Silmalloy boxes and patented compartment and clip systems have long been standard equipment for serious fly fishers in Britain and abroad, valued for their durability, corrosion resistance, and precise construction.

Condition notes: Very good vintage condition overall. Silmalloy aluminum body remains structurally sound, showing scattered scratches, small surface marks, and areas of discoloration consistent with age and field use, with no major dents, crushed corners, or structural distortion observed. Lid aligns properly, and hinge and closure operate as intended. Two internal clip plates remain firmly secured and open and close smoothly. Interior shows light surface wear but remains generally clean. Bottom stamped “WHEATLEY SILMALLOY METAL.” Area near side hinge stamped “MADE IN ENGLAND” with company diamond trademark. Box contains 36 hand-tied vintage trout flies in assorted sizes, colors, and patterns, with feather dressings, hackles, bodies, and hooks showing varying degrees of wear consistent with prior use and storage. Some clips remain unused. Other items in photos not included.
