For the angler …  a vintage Wheatley aluminum fly box, c. 1925–1940, measuring 3-1/2" x 4-7/8" and fitted with 12 latchable compartments and a wool-lined fly pad. The compartments hold 24 small traditional trout flies, while the wool liner holds 6 larger wet flies with feather wings, hackled bodies, and red, orange, yellow, and natural-toned dressings.  A compact piece of early English sporting kit, it would make an inspired gift for the outdoorsman and a distinctive display piece on a gentleman’s desk or side table.

The contents of the box include a range of small vintage trout dries, wet flies, and hackled patterns tied with feather wings, fine hackle, thread bodies, and ribbed details. The wool-lined side holds larger traditional wet flies and small salmon/sea trout-style patterns, with feather wings, soft hackles, and natural materials typical of vintage hand-tied British flies.

Richard Wheatley was founded in Birmingham, England in 1860 and has produced metal fly boxes continuously for more than a century. Their lightweight aluminum Silmalloy boxes and patented compartment and clip systems have long been standard equipment for serious fly fishers in Britain and abroad, valued for their durability, corrosion resistance, and precise construction.

Dimensions (Closed): 3-1/2" x 4-7/8" x 1”
Weight: 4.6 ounces

Condition notes: Very good vintage condition overall with honest wear consistent with age, handling, and field use. Aluminum body remains structurally sound, with scattered scratches, rub marks, small dents, light discoloration, and age-related surface wear throughout. Lid opens easily, hinge operates smoothly, and main closure shuts firmly and securely. End panels are marked with Wheatley logo and MADE IN ENGLAND. Interior is marked RD No 691893 (registered 1922) and PAT No 242370 (issued 1925). All 12 compartment lids open and close, though 2–3 lids stick slightly and may require gentle coaxing with a toothpick or similar. Transparent yellow-tinted compartment covers remain intact, with only minor surface wear visible on close inspection.  Wool-lined fly pad shows visible age-related staining and discoloration. Box contains 24 small traditional trout flies in compartment side and 6 larger wet flies on wool-lined side; flies appear vintage and generally well-preserved, with minor wear, irregularity, and age consistent with prior storage and handling.
