Vintage Wheatley Fly Box with 70+ Trout Flies | Silmalloy Aluminum Case with 12 Compartments

For the angler …  a vintage Wheatley “Silmalloy” fly box in aluminum alloy measuring 3-1/2" x 4-7/8", fitted with twelve latchable compartments, a foam insert, and well over 70 hand-tied English trout flies in a wide range of sizes and color combinations.  The box remains in very good vintage condition with hinges, compartment catches, and main closure all functioning cleanly and securely.  

An intentional and substantial collection, the flies include a varied assortment of classic wet flies, soft hackles, and small streamer patterns tied with feather hackles, peacock herl, tinsel ribbing, hair wings, and other traditional materials. Several patterns feature bright attractor colors, silver and gold bodies, and layered feather construction, typical of hand-tied flies designed for river or loch fishing.

Richard Wheatley was founded in Birmingham, England in 1860 and has produced metal fly boxes continuously for more than a century. Their lightweight aluminum Silmalloy boxes and patented compartment and clip systems have long been standard equipment for serious fly fishers in Britain and abroad, valued for their durability, corrosion resistance, and precise construction.

Condition notes: Very good vintage condition overall with visible surface wear to top lid from use in the field. Aluminum alloy body remains structurally sound, showing scattered scratches, rub marks, and areas of discoloration, but no major dents, crushed corners, or structural distortion. Lid and base align properly and hinge operates smoothly; main closure and all twelve compartment catches function cleanly and securely. Exterior stamped “WHEATLEY SILMALLOY METAL.” Interior remains generally clean throughout. Flies include a varied assortment of hand-tied wet flies, soft hackles, and streamer patterns in assorted sizes, colors, and hook types. Feather dressings, hackles, and bodies remain generally well-preserved with only occasional minor wear or irregularity consistent with prior handling and use. Other items in photos not included.
