For the fishing enthusiast …  a well-loved, 3-7/8-inch Nottingham-style wood and brass fishing reel, dating from the 1910s to 1930s.  It features beautifully turned concentric rings, ebonite handles, and aged brass fittings.  While the original varnish is worn from years of use and the brass shows tarnish, the reel displays a wonderful patina, and runs smoothly, with a functional on/off ratchet check.  Recommended for display only, it would make a charming addition to a gentleman’s desk, bookshelf, or lakeside retreat.

Nottingham-style reels originated in and around Nottingham, England, where they evolved from techniques used to make wooden spools used in lace-making. Nottingham reels are typically light, free-running, wooden reels primarily designed for river fishing.

Dimensions: Spool: 3-7/8” diameter x 1-7/8”, Footing 2-3/8”
Weight: 8.5 ounces

Condition Notes: Surface wear throughout, including areas of varnish loss, minor scratches, and tarnish to the brass—all consistent with age and use. Reel displays a beautiful, time-earned patina. Spool runs smoothly and features a functional on/off ratchet check, though recommended for decorative use only. No visible maker’s mark.
