For the woodworker … a superb, well-loved English carpenter’s square (or try square), possibly dating from the early 1900s, with brass fittings and a glorious patina reflecting years of use. Marked “P.H.G.S.” and “warranted.” A perfect gift for the craftsman.
Try squares are used for marking and checking 90 degree angles on pieces of wood. (The name "square" is a reference to the tool's function, not the appearance.) Wooden try squares have survived from as far back as Ancient Rome, and historically have been used by woodworkers and carpenters as symbols in signs and heraldry to represent their trade. The square is incorporated into the most common Freemasonry symbol, the Square and Compasses.
