For the craftsman … a handsome wooden chamfer plane, circa 1880-1910, measuring just under 6 inches in length. A compact and highly tactile instrument, it features a neatly shaped wedge, steel iron, and an adjustable side stop secured with a screw-and-plate fitting—a refinement typical of the period. Fashioned from beech and finished with a warm varnish that has developed a fine patina over time, this is a functional yet decorative piece with a distinct character and would display beautifully in a gentleman’s study or workshop.
Chamfer planes were designed to cut 45 degree bevels along the edge of a board, an essential detail in fine joinery. Our example bears the faint remnants of an oval maker’s stamp on the heel and shows a strong resemblance to documented models by C. Nurse & Co. of London, active in the late Victorian and Edwardian eras. A perfect blend of form and function, it reflects the pride tradesmen and small makers took in producing tools that were both practical and finely finished.
Dimensions: (Body) 5-15/16” x 2-1/8” x 2-3/8”
Weight: 14.9 oz
Condition notes: Very good antique condition overall, with light surface wear throughout consistent with age and regular use. Heel retains faint remnants of an oval maker’s stamp, partially obscured but typical of late Victorian/Edwardian British makers such as C. Nurse & Co. Steel iron remains reasonably sharp and seated securely; likely removable for sharpening, though this has not been attempted. Adjustable brass side stop shows traces of old gold paint and functions as intended, with screw-and-plate mechanism tightening and loosening smoothly. Beech body finished with a warm varnish retains an attractive, time-earned patina. Tool has been lightly waxed. Other items in photos not included.
